What Causes ‘Bags Under the Eyes’ in People?

The skin around your eyes is the most fragile and thinnest of any other part of your body. The muscles that surround your eyes deteriorate as you age. This allows for the circulation and accumulation of healthy fat and fluid under your eyes. Additionally, dark circles under the eyes are typical after a bad night’s sleep.

But why do individuals develop dark, purple eye bags? Dr. Carol Clinton, a skin-care expert at Timeless Skin Solutions in Dublin, Ohio, says the answer is both hereditary (related to your DNA) and environmental (a consequence of your daily activities, such as scratching your eyes or getting too little sleep).

When it comes to eye bags, individuals with thin or light skin are more susceptible than those with thicker or darker eyes due to heredity. This is due to the fact that pale skin doesn’t do anything to conceal what’s going on under the surface of the skin. Clinton said that when individuals are fatigued or worried, blood circulation in the eye region slows, causing blood to collect there. According to her, stretched and leaky capillaries cause puffy, dark under-eye circles.

The migration of fat from under the eyeball toward the front of the eye may be genetically predisposed in certain individuals. In 2008, a research published in the journal Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery indicated that eye bags grow not from existing fat, but from an age-associated increase in fat under the eyes.

Clinton said, “when fat moves forward, people think about getting surgery in that region.” According to her, Subluxation has nothing to do with how much sleep a person receives. Therefore, despite getting nine hours of sleep every night, some people nevertheless develop eye bags due to genetic susceptibility.

Clinton also pointed out, exposure to the sun may also damage and weaken the skin, making dark circles seem more pronounced under the eyes. According to the Mayo Clinic, consuming salty foods may make you retain more water, which makes your eye bags worse.

It’s also been shown that rubbing your eyes may lead to dark circles because it promotes leaky capillaries. Clinton said, try placing an ice cube on your closed eyes for 60 to 90 seconds when they are irritated to prevent rubbing them.

Clinton said that using a cold compress will constrict the blood vessels, thereby alleviating the itching. “You’ll feel better right away.”

Eye bags may be caused by a variety of external causes, including gravity. Age-related degeneration of connective tissue results in the loss of structural proteins such as collagen and elastin. Clinton said, as individuals age, the bones in their face lose volume, which adds to the appearance of eye bags because “everything simply hangs” off the face.

As a whole, the tissues and muscles that support your eyelids deteriorate with time. It’s possible that your skin may begin to droop and fat that’s usually found in the region surrounding your eyes will migrate below your eyes. Additionally, fluid may collect in the region under your eyes, giving the appearance of puffy or swollen under-eyes.

De-puffing and brightening solutions for the eye area are widely available, although they are not always effective.

Eye bags may be reduced momentarily with increased water intake and the use of a cold compress; however, for long-term reduction, certain lifestyle changes are required. Particularly if you have a family history of puffy eyes and dark circles beneath the eyes, this is critical.

  • Increase your intake of foods high in iron and vitamin C
  • Apply tea bags
  • Reduce salt intake
  • Stay hydrated
  • You must abstain from smoking

  • Get at least 8 hours of sleep        
  • Use sunscreen daily
  • Reduce the symptoms of allergies
  • Use retinol or hemorrhoid cream daily
  • Reduce your intake of alcoholic beverages

In addition, there are anti-wrinkle and anti-puffiness skin therapies available to minimize the appearance of sagging beneath the eyes. Laser resurfacing, Chemical peels and injectable dermal fillers are all on the list of available procedures.
